about

In the early 2000s I was touring solo in the US and I remember after a particularly lame show in Cleveland tucking into a room at a Red Roof Inn. On the landline, to stave off the loneliness, I called my buddy and fellow singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith and told him my troubles. To which he said, "Suzie, most girls your age are planning their weddings." I laughed and thought this was a funny notion - especially because I thought that he of all people would understand the call of the road even when it becomes desolate in a motel room on the interstate.

Later that year, I wrote this song in honour of all my musician friends who found it difficult to stay faithful to the ones at home and who end up alone like me in a hotel room on the interstate. I had just met one of these road dogs upon whom I based this song and in a twist of irony, ended up getting engaged to him, and indeed, just like all the other girls my age, started planning a wedding.

So this recording is now 20 years old and marks my 20th anniversary to that same road dog I married. Somehow in spite of loving to roam, we have stayed together. We both still love the road but hit it far less often than in our younger days. That passion has always been a bond we share and I feel lucky that we often get to travel it together.

lyrics

Little White Lies
by Suzie Ungerleider

Three weeks and your soul is spent
She sent you packing but it ain't over yet
You will confess but you won't repent
So you ain't gotta hope in hell

The moon was shining down on your first kiss
Angora sweater between you and bliss
But now your hit has become a miss
So you ain't gotta hope in hell

Too many nights on the road you said
Made you lose your heart where you lay your head
You try to tell her when you look in her eyes
That her one big love is now a little white lie

She read your name on the bathroom wall
She's got your number so you'll get no call
Kiss came to shove and now you're bound to fall
So you ain't gotta hope in hell

Too many nights on the road you said
Made you lose your heart where you lay your head
You try to tell her when you look in her eyes
That her one big love is now a little white lie

Yellow motel on a dusty road
Between the sheets that are pressed and cold
Dying for someone to take off your clothes
But you ain't gotta hope in hell
No you ain't gotta hope in hell
