about

In the early 2000s I was very lucky to be touring a lot with my excellent band in the UK. But I had fallen in love with a drummer who was also on the road but in another band. I wrote this love song for him, feeling excited and happy about re-uniting with him when I got a break from the road which in England felt like it was an endless maze we had to navigate with just a huge book of maps and a pocketful of blind faith. The song contains the lyric "Now I'm rolling like a bitch on wheels across the Great Divide"* and thus supplied the original title to the album which was supposed to be Bitch on Wheels. The record label said No WAY! and so I resorted to the album being called Oh Susanna.

PS. I was channeling Mick Jagger in this song who was one of my idols as a kid. I even fooled my mom into thinking this was a Rolling Stones cover.

*Did you catch the nod to the song "Across the Great Divide" by The Band? I was listening endlessly to their records when I was writing these songs.

Published by Stella Records

It’s been 22 hours and 45 days, yeah
And every inch of this road is twisted into a maze, yeah
I’m running on rotgut and a pocketful of blind faith
‘Cause I wanna be there right by your side.

There once was a time all I wanted was this game, yeah
So I swallowed it whole when I should have had a taste, yeah
Now I’m rolling like a bitch on wheels across the Great Divide
‘Cause I wanna be there, yeah I wanna be there, yeah I wanna be there right by your side.

I’m coming down that cross I ain’t singing no more blues
I traded in that old has been rusted worn-out muse.

It’s been 22 hours and 45 days, yeah
And these wandering shoes is just a ball and a chain, yeah
And now I believe I’ll be freed by your sweet smile
‘Cause I wanna be there, yeah I wanna be there, yeah I wanna there right by your side
By your side
Right by your side.
